Malaysia lands bronze medal at inaugural International AI Olympiad
Burgas, Bulgaria - Dec 2, 2024
Malaysia secured a bronze medal at the first International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI), held from August 9-15, 2024, in Burgas, Bulgaria. More than 160 students from 35 countries participated in this event.
IOAI 2024 consisted of a take-home scientific round and an on-site scientific round. In the take-home, students were given one month to work on three challenging problems spanning machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing using Google Colab notebooks. While on-site in Burgas, students were given limited time to tackle three problems that built upon the problems provided in the take-home. In addition, a practical round was hosted where students used generative AI tools to create a music video based on Bulgarian singer Maria Ilieva’s discography. Olympiad medals are awarded on the basis of the combined scores from the scientific rounds only.
The Malaysian team’s journey to IOAI was marked by intensive preparation. Team members were screened and selected from existing olympiad programmes after a semester’s worth of training and two rounds of competitive selection. None of the students involved in training had meaningful prior exposure to AI, and faced clashing examination schedules in the run-up towards IOAI. Despite these obstacles, the team’s hard work and perseverance resulted in a well-deserved bronze medal.
Team Malaysia is grateful to the dedication of our students throughout the training and selection process, as well as the patience and support from their parents.
